Sea Bones Artist Series - Introducing: FRANCESCA OWEN

Hello Francesca.
Do you prefer to to be called Francesca, or do you have a nickname?

I love Francesca, however a lot of people call me Frankie

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, and how you got involved with
underwater photography?

My passion for the water started as a Synchronised Swimmer at the age of 8, following to compete at the 2012 Olympics Games. My bachelor of Photojournalism enabled me to combine two of my passions, water and photography which took me beneath the surface.. I enjoy capturing the magic that unfolds underwater, and lure my audience in through the elegance and movement of the human body.

What fascinates you so much capturing these dreamy images under water?

It brings back the feeling I use to get when being a Synchro swimmer.. the feeling of being free and alive. There's something so beautiful about being in the water.. how it runs through your hair, the way it holds you up..

You have a series 'Mermaid Bones' currently hanging in store, can you share
with us how this series came to life?

People always use to refer to synchro swimmers as mermaids, so I wanted to incorporate a feminine element to the body of work but drawing it back to basics.. Mermaid bones is all about exposing the raw beauty of the human body as well as the feeling you get when in the water..  Mermaid Bones came to me one day after a morning shoot at Noosa and it all just clicked!

Where do you go for inspiration? And who are some photographers you are inspired by?

Esther Williams is one of my main iconic inspirations! I live in a creative world and am surrounded by creative people so I feel my inspiration is all around me, I tend to draw from past experiences when I use to perform as I think back to how that made me feel so I try to show that in my work. I am also moved by reading quotes and poems..

Photographers who inspire me.. where do I start! My love for black and white came from the great Peter Lindbergh..  and I love the underwater work of Ed Freeman! There's also a HEAP of underwater photographers that I love like Andy Staley and Kate Bellm just to name a few.

Describe to us your dream day.

Dream day would be starting the day with an underwater shoot, then having breakfast at a cute cafe, then ending it with a bush walk

What is your current favourite song?
